ISE-SHIMA SAIKOU-KAI
Furuichi appears as a location in novels
Among novels by popular writers suchas Ihara-Saikaku (1642-1693), Cikamatsu-Monzaemon (1658- 1724),Takizawa-Bakin(1767-1848),Shiga-Naoya (1883-1971),here is a wellknown ‘Shank's mare
along theTokaido route'written by Jippensha-Ikku(1765-1831),one of the greatest comicnovel
writers of the Edo era. It is a comical traveler's journal where two jocular men. Yajirobeiand Kitahachi visit the famous spots
from Edo (Tokyo) to Kamigata (Osaka) viaIse district (Mie Pref.).
Furuichi enters the stage of this journal, and somefamous Japanese inns such as Bizen-ya, Abura-
ya,Chitsuka-ya,Asakichi appeartoo. Fuji-ya,one of these inns, is where they plan to spend the
night.
The two get mixed up in a group ofpilgrims and make their way separately to Furuichi. Yajirobei
forgets theirinn's name and asks people on the street. Fuji means wisteria. He can recallonly an
image of wisteria hanging down from trellis.
Yaji: Do you Happen toknow of an inn around here whose name is something like hanging
down from a shelf ?
First: You'd betterask at a house on that corner. That's where someone hanged himself last year.
Second: A couple ofdoors away there's house where someone who swallowed a rice dumpling
fallingoff a shelf got it stuck in the throat and died. I suppose that's it.
With all the conflicting informationhe receives he help lessly seeks here and there until he is dog-
tired. He dropsin at a house to ask for a cup of tea. What a lucky coincidence! This is ’Fuji-ya’
itself, and again they two friends meet. This Fuji-ya used to be situated in the openspace below
Jugan-in Temple.
A little further there is a stone signshowing the site where famous street performers Osugi and
Otama played the Samisen to passers-by. This scene also appears in the nove1. The spectators
throw the performers tip coins. They skillfully catchthem with their plectrums. Kitahachi aims a coin
at her face, but she cleverlydodges it. Yajirobei throws some in a bundle off that mark. Kitahachi,
thenmischievously throws a pebble at her instead, she flips it back promptly on toYajirobei's face.
All the people burst into laughter. The stories of this kind have as their background, the
bustling street in thosedays.
