Ushitani-zaka (Bull valley Slope) and its neighborhood
The slope's name is derived from amonsterous bull demon who is said to have lived around here.
See the two big lanterns offered by aworshipper to the Ise Grand shrines, and the westem-style large building acrossthe street is a department of the Grand Shrines Office, where calendars andtalismans are produced. These are given at the Grand Shrines and other shrinesthroughout the country. There is a museum to the memory of ItoShoha, the Shoha Museum nearby. On the opposite side is the memorial monument oflsobe Hyakurin (1836-1906),Shoha's teacher,who studied painting in Kyoto andlater became famous painter of historical scenes bywinning various prizes.

At the end of the street a stonesign beside the Kuromon-bashi (Black Gate Bridge) tells that this spot is thegateway to the Uji area,the site of the Inner Shurine. Herethere used to be aguard-house until the Meiji Restoration.
